The joy was palpable as the Saints triumphed over the Brown Bears with a final score of 82-71, marking a thrilling start to the 2026-27 season. With the season-opening victory, Siena secured not only a win but a renewed sense of hope and excitement for the year ahead.

What Happened

The Siena women's basketball team kicked off their season in style, delivering an impressive performance against Brown. The Saints showcased their talent and determination, led by standout players Nicole Melious and Francesca Schiro, both of whom tallied 20 points on the night. This marked Siena's first season-opening victory since the 2023-24 season and their first home opener win since 2022-23.

The game was a back-and-forth battle, but Siena's resilience shone through in the fourth quarter. The Saints pulled away with a series of key plays, demonstrating their teamwork and skill on both ends of the court. The crowd's energy surged as the team executed crisp passes and strategic plays, leaving fans on the edge of their seats.

Community Reaction

The excitement surrounding the Siena women's basketball team extends beyond the court. Local families and fans filled the stands, representing the strong community support that Siena athletics enjoys. Many in attendance were not just fans of the game but parents and friends of the players, emphasizing the importance of family ties in the realm of sports. This sense of community was further highlighted by the presence of local youth basketball teams, who were invited to the game as part of a promotion aimed at encouraging young athletes to engage with collegiate sports.

“It’s amazing to see so many families here tonight,” said local resident and Siena alumna Maria Torres, who brought her children to the game. “We’ve been following the team for years, and it’s always a treat to see them win at home. It brings everyone together.” This sentiment was echoed throughout the arena, as fans celebrated not just the victory but the shared experience of supporting their team.

Building a Legacy

As the team embarks on this new season, the sense of unity and commitment is palpable. Siena's athletic programs have long been a source of pride for the Albany community, fostering a spirit of camaraderie and encouragement among families. The success of the women's basketball team is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the players, coaches, and the entire Siena community.

“It feels incredible to win at home and start the season off right,” said Melious after the game, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. “We’ve worked hard during the offseason, and it’s great to see it pay off in front of our fans.” Her sentiment echoed the feelings of many players who view their time on the court not just as a sport, but as a way to connect with their community.

In addition to the players' efforts, the coaching staff has played a crucial role in shaping the team's culture. Head coach Ali Jaques, who has been with the program for several seasons, emphasized the importance of building character as much as skill. “We focus on developing well-rounded individuals who can thrive both on and off the court,” she said. This philosophy resonates deeply within the Siena community, where education and personal growth are highly valued.

Looking forward, the Siena Saints are poised to build on this momentum. Their next game is set for later this week, where they will face a formidable opponent in their quest for a successful season.
